Manuel Antonio Beachfront and Rainforest Location
Arenas Del Mar is located on the Central Pacific Coast of Costa Rica about 2 miles from the nearest airstrip located in the town of Quepos (in the Manuel Antonio area). Quepos is a short 20 minute flight from Costa Rica’s capital of San Jose where international flights land at Juan Santamaria International Airport (SJO). Driving from SJO takes about 3 hours.
The resort is situated on a cliff with direct access to two pristine sand beaches: Espadilla Beach and Playitas Beach. Our property overlooks the spectacular Manuel Antonio National Park and is located within walking distance of Costa Rica’s most visited national park.
The easiest and fastest way to get to Arenas Del Mar is with a domestic flight on one of our two domestic airlines offering daily flights from San Jose to the nearby small airstrip in Quepos, a short 15 minute ride to Arenas Del Mar. Both airlines – Sansa & Nature Air depart from a small terminal within walking distance of Juan Santamaria International Airport (SJO) in San Jose. For specific arrival and departure times, please confirm each respective airline’s website or contact us at [email protected]. We will gladly assist you with airline tickets for domestic flights and/or transportation from the airport to Arenas Del Mar. Please note: all domestic flights in Costa Rica are certified as Carbon Neutral and will compensate all carbon emissions emitted by your flight.
In case you would like to travel by land in a minivan with a private driver, we can gladly arrange airport transfers to and from Arenas del Mar for you. Please provide us with flight details such as time of arrival, flight number and airline as well as number of people in order to confirm the transfer to you. This transfer takes approximately 3 hours (including a stop to see crocodiles in the Tarcoles River on the way) and the cost of it is about $200/per way (please confirm this rate with our reservations department). This amount can be charged to your final bill at the hotel. All of our transfer rates are up to four people and there will be an additional amount charged per additional person.
The last 4.7 kilometers to Arenas del Mar
The center of Quepos is laid out in a square grid. In the NW corner, the Manuel Antonio road, with its 6K marker, heads off diagonally. A Hertz location 100 meters on the left will confirm that you are on the correct road. The road climbs and is twisty.
At 2.8K, you will pass on the left the Manuel Antonio Escuela (school), a soccer field (this begins to explain why tiny Costa Rica made the Final 8 of the soccer World Cup in Brazil!) and the Pura Vida Supermarket.
At 3.5K get ready to turn right. Café Milagra is on the left. Turn before the Plaza Vista, a shopping center, built with a lot of glass and including a pharmacy and supermarket. Emilio’s restaurant and then the old Mariposa hotel 200 meters on the left will confirm that you are on the correct road. Go downhill on a narrow twisty road and watch out for speeding, uphill traffic.
Arenas del Mar Beachfront and Rainforest Resort is secluded and in paradise, so it should not be surprising that access is a little challenging! At 4.2K the road takes a sharp turn to the right, but you need to stop and take a careful left turn, essentially keeping straight. (There is a private left turn just before, which you should ignore.) There is a carved wooden sign pointing to Arenas del Mar and out two restaurants, Mirador and Playitas.
At this turn, the road drops off sharply. In some cars short drivers cannot see the road over the dashboard for a second or two! Stay to the left, so as not to scrape your undercarriage on the road at the right. But make sure that you avoid the runoff drainage ditch to the left of the road. After these fun-filled one or two seconds, the steep “road” down will appear. It is nothing more than two concrete strips for your wheels.
We describe this turn in detail on the theory that to be forewarned is to be forearmed! But don’t worry too much, our staff successfully and easily make the drive daily in their small cars. A 4×4 SUV is not necessary.
Proceed downhill. Beautiful views of the bay will begin to appear.
At 4.6K, the Arenas del Mar entrance sign is on the right. Turn and go anti-clockwise around the guard station to the Welcome Center at 4.7K. You will have arrived in paradise.
